LOGLINE
A steadfast young scientist confronts a local priest as she investigates the madness that has consumed her dying partner.
OUR STORY BEGINS
Amidst the promise and progress of the early 20th century, Chiara, a passionate young astronomer, finds herself drawn back into a world of occult mystery and religious fervor. A desperate letter prompts her return to the observatory she once called home, where her ex-partner, Grey– a brilliant scientist crippled by a degenerative eye disease– awaits their reunion. Chiara arrives at the observatory, prepared to meet a man on his deathbed. But as the night progresses, she discovers something far worse.
What’s happened to Grey in the year since she left? Each room reveals a piece of the puzzle. Bloodied tools, bits of gore, mangled Bibles and Eucharistic offerings– the evidence points at a desperate turn to faith when all else had failed.
Chiara finds Grey waiting in the central chamber. The mad scientist is a frightening sight. Bandaged, blind, and suffering from sun poisoning, he explains that he lured her back to partake in his salvation. Father Damien, a local priest, has promised Grey eternal life and a cure to his illness if he submits to God entirely. So, in accordance with “God’s will”, Grey has constructed an enormous machine capable of harnessing the sun and restoring his vision.
Chiara attempts an unsuccessful escape. Grey binds her to the machine and binds himself nearby as the sun begins to rise. Concentrated sunlight floods the room as Grey activates his creation, and the death trap begins to burn. Chiara cuts through her bonds and attempts to free Grey, but he resists, intent on his martyrdom. She makes her escape as the room is engulfed in flames, her partner immolated in his quest for transcendence.
The sun continues to rise as Chiara arrives at Damien’s church. She finds the priest and recounts the previous night’s tale in flashback, uncovering his role and indicting him in Grey’s madness. The scientist and the priest attempt to outmaneuver each other as the pews become a battleground. Damien’s manipulation proves hard to combat, but her ordeal at Grey’s hands reminds Chiara of where she stands. Neither Damien nor God can hold her responsible for Grey’s choices. His fate is his own. Damien crumbles under her assertion, and Chiara walks off into a new day– free from her tormentors, and free of the guilt and shame they would use to hold her down.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENTS
In the post-COVID era, I’ve spent significant time working as an AV technician for church congregations. Sitting through sermons, I often ask, “Why?” I try to understand what draws others to this space and what motivates them beyond the sanctuary. These questions shaped Burden of Proof, including Chiara’s search for stability and comfort among people who seek to influence her desires and thinking. I’ve never been a believer; church has always felt like a chore, something I do for others, not myself. I wanted to channel that tension into Chiara and convey the existential feelings I encounter nearly every Sunday.
NATE DREW (WRITER & DIRECTOR)
There are few things more difficult than watching the people you love buy into self-destructive ideology, and feeling like it’s your fault. Burden of Proof was a chance to address this issue in a horror/thriller container, an argument for liberating yourself from the self-inflicted consequences of other people’s actions. Some might call this selfish, but it’s not about abandoning conversation or a refusal to accept another perspective– it’s about protecting your peace when ignorance and stubbornness leads conversation to fail. I’m still dealing with my own feelings on the subject. But asserting our beliefs, in that moment, through this story, felt like a necessity for Nate and I. Of course, Burden of Proof is also a tense and exciting Gothic horror piece with sleazy priests, mad scientists, mind games, and death machines, and if that’s what sticks in the end, I’ll have no complaints.

BIGGER, BETTER, BOLDER
Burden of Proof was conceived as a senior capstone film for the University of Pittsburgh’s Film & Media Studies program, but its production and execution landed it firmly amongst the indie film scene of Pittsburgh, PA. With a 36-person crew, $4,500 budget, ~$1,500 of in-kind donations (including props, costumes, locations, and equipment), and a cast of established local actors and incredible newcomers, the film represents a milestone for 7to8 Production & Distribution and a hard-earned journey in punching above your weight.
Our 36-person crew– formed of friends, classmates, and professional contacts– boasts 33 members who are current college students or recent graduates. These previous collaborators were eager to dedicate their time and expertise, representing an achievement in networking, friendship, and on-set conduct that sits at the core of our philosophy. One of the significant goals of our production was to replicate the structure and environment of higher-budget film sets to help the crew build confidence and experience for the future. We were fortunate enough to incorporate below-the-line positions often absent from student film sets, such as a Production Manager, Production Coordinator, DIT, construction team, set dec team, and VFX team. Burden of Proof wasn’t big just for show– every artist involved was an irreplaceable piece of the puzzle. Our incredible team worked tirelessly (but not thanklessly!) over three days of shooting and months of pre-production to prove that being young doesn’t mean dreaming small.
Other resources further established Burden of Proof as a new step for 7to8. The project was a recipient of a $4,000 Brackenridge Grant from the University of Pittsburgh’s David C. Frederick Honors College Program, an award typically distributed to STEM-related research. This selection demonstrates significant community interest and an excitement that has been building since May 2025. The Pittsburgh community doubled their impact when a weeks-long location scout led the Calvary United Methodist Church to open their doors for our crew. Having access to this 134-year old church on Pittsburgh’s North Shore took this film beyond apartments and sidewalks, and lent weight and excitement to our production. Our DP’s connections at The Camera Department– a premier rental house in Pittsburgh servicing numerous professional and independent productions– afforded us a Sony BURANO and Cooke lenses at a fraction of the price, shaping the film’s distinct visual style. Pittsburgh's abundance of humble, hardworking talent brought us a cast that blew the script off the page. Local veterans Curtis Caldwell and David Ogrodowski, steeped in professional and indie credits, brought an energy and danger to Grey and Father Damien. Jordyn Gilliard, a newcomer on the Pittsburgh scene, shaped Chiara with raw talent and singular determination. Their willingness and good humor was as essential to the film as anything behind the camera.
Burden of Proof was a bold new step for 7to8 and the entire filmmaking team, but it cleared a path we all hope to continue walking. Our incredible network of friends and artists, as well as our roots in the Pittsburgh community, made for a project that was more than just a student film. It’s our privilege to share it with you as we continue to make films that challenge our understanding of what’s possible.
