The Essentials of Set Dressing

Updated: Oct 16

Explain the difference between set dress and props to someone who may not know the difference.

Set dressing is everything displayed on set that's built into the setting and environment. This could be as simple as adding dust to books to make them appear older and worn, or incorporating specific period pieces to match a specific time and place. Props are more like objects that actors actively use to help drive the story. Even though set dressing and props fall under the same department (so to speak), understanding the essentials of set dressing shows how equally important both are to the visual storytelling of a film. Together, they create layers of visual detail that make the world of the film feel believable and authentic, which can really draw viewers deeper into the story and make it feel real!

What’s your process when approaching a new project? Explain the process of hashing out your ideas. Are there any methods you follow?

Going into new projects, extensive research is definitely necessary in order to get the proper appearance and aesthetics for the film. Attention to detail is crucial! Both the little touches and larger elements matter equally in creating an accurate scene.  Knowing your location is also one of the most important factors when I approach set dressing. How old or modern is the space? What needs to be added or removed from the location in order to fit the vibe of the film? Also, working closely with the director and discussing the script helps with gathering the essential visual elements.

What is a day on set like for you?

I love days when I work on a film set! It’s intense but in the best way possible! Working strategically, moving quickly, and problem-solving are all part of the process of being on set. This is especially true for set dressing, where attention to detail is taken very seriously and every piece needs to be in a specific place. It’s also just as exciting to work with people who are just as passionate and dedicated to the craft. It’s a satisfying process that makes me want to continue working!

What’s the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part of being a set dresser is timing. It can take a long time to get everything designed and placed properly, especially when working with the most detailed and important elements of a scene. Each intricate piece often requires time and care to get just right.

How did you become a set dresser? Is there something about the role that particularly interests you?

I became a set dresser, only knowing a little bit about the job. As someone who is organized and detail-oriented, I’ve always had a love for production design. I jumped at the opportunity when 7to8 offered me a set dec position on Burden of Proof, even though I had no idea what to expect. Going into my first day on set, I definitely underestimated the amount of work set dressers actually do. Every little corner of the room needed to match the look and tone of the film. It requires incredibly precise work and being mindful of the placement of every set piece. For example, a chair needs to be angled exactly this way or turned in this direction, there needs to be a specific amount of dust on a desk, etc. Every detail counts! After working as a set dresser on Burden of Proof, I knew that this was something that I wanted to do for future films!

For those who want to become set dressers but don’t know where to start, what would you recommend they do?

Watch movies with extensive set or production design, and you'll notice that the setting and environment are one of the most important things in films. Take time to consider where your film takes place and what elements can make the characters (and the audience) feel like they're actually there! The right details significantly impact the way that the story is told.
